The Coca-Cola Co has launched its sparkling Glaceau Smartwater variant in the UK.

The company said last week that the UK roll-out comes as the "sparkling water trend is surging" in the country. The sparkling variant of Smartwater launched in the US last year.

Citing Nielsen data, Coca-Cola Co said consumer demand for sparkling water in the UK has increased by 10% in the last 12 months.

The product is made using British spring water from Northumberland. The water is vapour-distilled then carbonated, and contains added electrolytes.

"Glacéau Smartwater has experienced significant success in the UK since it was launched two years ago," said Aedamar Howlett, marketing director at Coca-Cola GB. "It is the fastest growing water brand and is now worth more than GBP30m (US$36.7m) in the UK."

Earlier this week, Coca-Cola lined up the launch of a limited edition ginger version of Coke in Australia, in an attempt to tempt back young adults to the CSD segment.
