The Coca-Cola Co has appointed a new head of its in-house bottling operations, BIG, after long-standing incumbent Irial Finan announced his retirement.

Calin Dragan, Coca-Cola's regional director for BIG's Southeast Asia and Middle East bottlers, will step up to the new role at the start of next year, Coca-Cola said today. He will be based in Singapore and report to John Murphy, president of Coca-Cola's Asia-Pacific unit.

Finan, who has been with Coca-Cola for 36 years and led the bottling group since 2004, will retire on 31 March. He will spend his last three months at the company as an executive advisor.

The 60-year-old Finan announced his retirement shortly after Coca-Cola completed the refranchsing of its US bottler network. The restructuring has reduced the remit of BIG, or Bottling Investments Group, which overseas bottling operations in regions where Coca-Cola doesn't have third-party bottlers. At its height the unit employed 80,000 people on five continents.

Coca-Cola has spent the last few years downsizing its bottling operations, handing territories to franchises in the US and elsewhere in a bid to decrease its bottling footprint. BIG's remaining territories are mainly in Asia. In September last year, Coca-Cola said that the bottler refranchising programme will cut its global workforce by two-thirds

Dragan, 51, has 24 years of experience in the Coca-Cola system, including a succession of bottling leadership roles in Asia Pacific and Europe. Prior to his current role, he served as representative director and acting chairman, president and CEO for Coca-Cola East Japan.
