The asymmetric shape of Coca-Colas new Fanta bottle added a challenge to the design process

The asymmetric shape of Coca-Cola's new Fanta bottle added a challenge to the design process

The Coca-Cola Co is to give a global roll out to its new asymmetric Fanta PET bottle.

The bottle, designed in collaboration with packaging firm Sidel, is already available in some European markets but will reach a wider audience over the next couple of months, according to Sidel.

The roll out comes after Coca-Cola and Sidel overcame a number of challenges while creating the bottle's spiral design. The unbalanced shape is described as a "rule-breaker" as asymmetric bottles can have stability and deformation issues. However, Coca-Cola said the final design has been fully tested and will be "truly unique in the world of carbonated packaging designs in PET". The design, which Coca-Cola says offers easier gripping and an improved pouring experience, is also structured to allow a glass version that will roll out at a later date.

"The physical strength of the new bottle is as good as the previous Fanta bottle," said Gregory Bentley, the Coca-Cola packaging engineer in charge of the global project. "Other line stability tests were also conducted by Sidel, achieving suitable results for high speed filling."

Coca-Cola said it decided to seek a new Fanta bottle after the previous Splash design pioneered by the brand became "something of a generic bottle" for sparkling beverages around the world. The company said it wanted to "provide a protectable new global standard for the brand".
