The Boston Beer Co is to launch a new Samuel Adams beer that blends two active fermentations.

Sam '76 contains both lager and ale yeast strains and will roll out across the US early next year. The beer was unveiled at the Great American Beer Festival, which ended on Saturday.

Boston Beer said the blending process delivers a "a distinct flavour that showcases the slight fruitiness of an ale with the balanced drinkability and smoothness of a lager". The beer contains Cascade, Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe and Galaxy hops.

Boston Beer is trying to revive Samuel Adams after blaming the brand for dragging down results. The brewery's beer volumes have declined in the past year, and despite a recent rally and the success of a hard seltzer, underlying weakness continues, according to analysts. Last month, Credit Suisse said there was a "fair probability" The Boston Beer Co will be sold within the next year, with Molson Coors the likeliest suitor.
