Tata Tea plans to expand from its tea and coffee heartland and compete globally in the 'ready-to-drink' beverages market.

Tata Tea is looking to acquire brands in Russia, Asia Pacific, Africa, and South America, the firm has said.

"Innovation in ready-to-drink beverages is a key strategy that we will follow to gain global leadership,"  said the group at the end of last week.

"We intend to take on giants like Coke, Pepsi and Danone with our RTD products," said Peter Unsworth, CEO of the Tetley Group, which was acquired by Tata in 2000.

"We may acquire global brands or brands that can become global. We would acquire categories that offer us functional benefits, and those that offer us value."

R Krishna Kumar, Tata Tea vice-chairman and director of Tata Sons, will spearhead the plan.

Sectors: Soft drinks
