Systembolaget's monthly sales have slipped yet again. The state-run alcohol retailing monopoly has announced a fall in sales of pure alcohol last month of 6.1% year-on-year.

Sales of spirits fell the most, by 14.2% compared to September last year. The areas of Sweden worst were in the northern county of Norrbotten and in the county of Skane in the south of the country. The falling sales were blamed on cross-border shopping and the lower alcohol excise duties in Denmark and Finland.

In August, Systembolaget's monthly sales fell by 5.3% year-on-year, and in July sales dropped by 17.3% compared to July 2003.
