SPI Group has confirmed to just-drinks the appointment of Dmitry Efimov as its new CEO.

The company, which owns the Stolichnaya vodka brand, said earlier this week that Efimov will assume the role "subject to (the) finalisation of local law formalities". SPI failed to provide any further details on the appointment, despite requests for information.

Efimov joins SPI as a replacement for Val Mendeleev, who quit the group in August last year, although SPI only confirmed his departure earlier this month.

In April 2011, privately-owned SPI confirmed that Andrey Skurikhin, one of its two shareholders, had left the company in late-2010. The Luxembourg-headquartered company is majority-owned by its founder, Yury Shefler, who bought the Stolichnaya brand from Russian state-owned Soyuzplodoimport in 1997 for US$300,000.

In the latest development in a long-running legal dispute over the Stolichnaya brand, a US appeals court ruled in January that Soyuzplodoimport, which disputes SPI's ownership of Stolichnaya, will be allowed to sue the brand's distributors in the country. The decision reverses a previous ruling in 2004 that said Soyuzplodoimport had no standing in US courts.

The state-owned firm has consistently claimed that SPI illegally bought the rights at far below market value by taking advantage of the chaos of the Soviet Union's breakup.
