The global market for stevia will reach 11,000 metric tonnes by 2014

Global sales of plant-based sweetener Stevia increased 27% in 2010, reaching sales of 3,500 metric tonnes, according to recent figures from Zenith International.

Data from the food and drink consultancy shows that the overall market value of stevia last year amounted to US$285m. Asia Pacific drove stevia's performance last year, accounting for 35.7% of volume sales, followed by North America.

"As rising levels of obesity and diabetes continue to dominate headlines, there has never been so much emphasis on reducing our caloric intake as well as consuming healthier foods and beverages," said Zenith's senior market analyst, Anya Hembrough. "After persistent efforts by key producers, legislators worldwide are finally giving the green light to this new zero-calorie sweetener."

Zenith forecasts that the global market for stevia will reach 11,000 metric tonnes by 2014, equivalent to $825m in value.
