The Russian spirits market was delivered a further hint that it was looking at increased state control of the industry this week.

Speaking in the Russian lower house of parliament yesterday, agriculture minister Alexei Gordeyev said he is in favour of stronger state control of the production and sale of alcohol.
He said that despite opposition from sectors of the industry, the government policy on the matter should be fundamentally changed.

He added that his ministry was working hard on a bill that would tighten such controls.
