The BBC will use its weekly Panorama show to cast the spotlight on minimum pricing for alcohol in bars.

The investigative documentary programme, to be aired this evening (10 August), will focus on a new initiative in the UK town of Oldham, which has seen the local council introduce a minimum pricing scheme for clubs and bars.

Bars wishing to charge less than GBP0.75 per alcohol unit for their drinks must make consumers line up in "post office-style", single-file queues at the bar.

The move has been introduced to quell mounting alcohol-fuelled violence in Oldham town centre.

Tonight's show, "The Truth About Happy Hour", will air on BBC1 at 20:30 BST.
