Soyuzplodimport (SPI), the Russian drinks company, which owns the rights to Stolichnaya vodka, has indictated that it is on the hunt for further acquisitions.

In an interview with the Moscow Times yesterday general director Andrei Skurikhin said that the company wanted to create a portfolio of multinational alcohol brands.

Asked whether this would mean becoming an international drinks company such as Allied Domecq or Guinness-UDV, Skurikhin said: "I wouldn't want to make comparisons at the moment, but why not?"

Skurikhin also confirmed SPI was analysing offers to bid for several vodka distilleries in Poland, which are currently being privatised, although he said "the task is not simply to buy something, but to buy something that fits our expectations for growth."

SPI recently acquired the biggest distillery in Latvia, Latvijas Balzams and also has plans to launch its export version of Stolichnaya on the Russian domestic market.

Companies: Allied Domecq
