Sparkling wine was the third-fastest growing FMCG segment in UK supermarkets in the 12 months to October, new Nielsen research has shown.

Shoppers in the UK spent an extra GBP101.9m (US$126m) - or 15.5% - on the segment in supermarkets in the 52 weeks to 8 October, compared to the same period in 2015. Total sparkling wine spend, which does not include Champagne sales, was GBP757.6m.

The segment, which includes Prosecco and Cava, was one of only three to see their sales rise by more than GBP100m in 2016, Nielsen said. Fresh fruit and 'free-from' were ahead of sparkling wine.

Overall, alcohol categories took four places in the top ten FMCG segments, which was based on an analysis of till sales data.

Spirits was the seventh-fastest-growing category, rising by GBP51.8m (1.3%) to GBP4bn, while lager was the eighth fastest-growing category, up GBP41.6m (1.4%) to GBP3.1bn. Stout & ale was the ninth fastest-growing category, increasing GBP32.6m (5.1%) to GBP674.7m.

Another Nielsen report released this month claimed that package design is a major factor behind the most successful product launches over the past two years.
