Sparkling wine consumption in Austria is on the decrease, according to Schlumberger's director. Robert Wutzl, director of the top-tier sparkling wine maker, said yesterday that consumption in the country should reach 19 million bottles this year. This would be a slight decrease on last year.

Although producers in Austria traditionally sell 40% of their sparkling wine in the last eight weeks of the year, Wutzl does not expect producers to make up the shortfall before New Year.

Around 800,000 bottles of French Champagne and 500,000 bottles of Spanish Cava are sold annually in Austria.
