The drinks distributor confirmed late yesterday (19 August) that it will buy Phoenix for an undisclosed sum. Southern will combine Phoenix with its operations in Utah, to make what it claims will be the state's largest wine broker.

The transaction is expected to complete by the end of this month, with the merger of operations taking place in September. As part of the move, Phoenix's sales division will transfer across to Southern Wine & Spirits of Utah.

Last month, Dale Huhnke was appointed operations VP for Southern's Illinois, Kentucky and Minnesota divisions.

Utah is one of the 18 US states with a state monopoly over the wholesaling and/or retailing of alcohol.
