Southern Wine & Spirits said today that it has created a new division, called Transatlantic Spirits, which will be responsible for driving Bacardi's portfolio.

Last month, Bacardi announced it would partner the soon-to-be-formed Southern Glazer's Wine and Spirits in the majority of US markets.

The new unit will be led by Steve Cohen, EVP & managing director, who recently joined Southern from Glazer's to assume the newly-created role. Cohen will report to Southern's COO Brad Vassar.

Transatlantic Spirits will begin operations from next month, when Southern starts dual distribution alongside incumbent Bacardi USA distributors. Bacardi said it would wind up its current contracts with around 35 partners across North America at the end of March. Southern and Glazer's will begin exclusive distribution for Bacardi USA from 1 April. Southern said today that the firms will "serve Bacardi USA separately until the two companies combine to form Southern Glazer's Wine and Spirits", which is planned to occur during the second quarter of 2016.

Cohen will be joined on the Transatlantic Spirits leadership team by Chris Minielly, who will serve as SVP, commercial strategy, and Kathleen Procario, who will serve as the division's national talent management director.
