Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., the largest wine and spirits distributor in the US, has announced the formation of the first nationwide unit catering specifically for Control States Business.

While all states 'control' the sale of alcoholic beverages to some degree, 'Control States' exercise more distribution control than simply enforcing licence provisions for the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages through the three-tier distribution arrangement.

Southern now operates in eight Control States including Maine, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Virginia as well as, pending regulatory approvals, in Mississippi and West Virginia.

"We understand the Control States business is unique and requires a specialised focus, qualified know-how and specific resources, not only on a local basis, but also on a national basis," said Southern's president and CEO, Wayne E. Chaplin. "Given our growing presence in many of the Control States markets, we felt it warranted the focus that a Control States Division team can provide in order to work ever more closely with our suppliers as well as being able to efficiently meet the needs of each Control State and the government officials who preside over them. The formation of this new Control States Division will enable us to be totally aligned with our suppliers' brands and programmes."

The company has also announced the appointment of Peter M. Hickey, who has 25 years experience as an executive in the wine and spirits business, as executive vice president, general manager of the Control States Division of Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc. Hickey takes up his post at the beginning of January 2006.

"We needed to start employing the best people in the industry to accomplish this and we are very proud that Peter will be joining us to lead our Control States team," Chaplin said. "Peter brings more than 15 years of Control States experience to our organisation, including proven skills in leading Control States operations from the supplier side of the business. Above all, we count on Peter contributing his expertise to our existing Control States business and our multi-state team."
