South African wine exports will again restart as Government measures loosen

Trade association Wines of South Africa (WOSA) said today the restrictions will drop tomorrow from level five to level four, allowing the resumption of the transport and export of wine. Alcohol sales in the country, however, remain prohibited.

Wine exports were initially banned as South Africa clamped down on movement to curb the spread of the coronavirus. A day later, the country's authorities back-tracked slightly, granting the industry special dispensation to conclude its harvest. A further concession allowed exports to resume. That concession was reversed on 16 April and exports were again banned.

The wine industry thanked the South African government for lifting restrictions, which require companies to follow social distancing measures and equip staff with protective clothing.

WOSA CEO Siobhan Thompson, said: "We are grateful to President [Cyril] Ramaphosa and the relevant government departments for the confirmation and providing certainty, and as such we endeavour to be responsible in our actions and messaging to ensure the safety of our people."
