Domestic soju shipments in the first six months of this year have dipped slightly, according to recent figures. The South Korean National Statistical Office said today (2 August) that shipments of the distilled liquor fell by 0.8% year-on-year for the period, to 544,585 kilolitres. The dip is the first decrease for Soju since 2002.

Domestic shipments of beer were also down in the first half of this year, the office said, by 1.7% year-on-year to 19,220 kilolitres.

Speaking to Yonhap English News in South Korea, an industry source said: "People are being forced to reduce alcohol consumption as the economy has yet to show signs of a recovery."

Whisky shipments for the period rose, however, by 8.7% year-on-year to 5,401 kilolitres.
