Sierra Nevada Brewing Co has recalled bottles in 35 US states after detecting a flaw that could allow glass to break off and fall inside.

The company said yesterday only 1 in 10,000 bottles are affected by the flaw, but it is taking the action to ensure consumer safety. No injuries have been reported, the brewer added, and it is working with its supplier to determine the cause of the issue.

The recall applies to 12oz bottles purchased in 35 mid-west, southern and east coast states as well as in the District of Columbia. Eight brands are affected including Sierra Nevada's top-seller, Pale Ale.

Sierra Nevada was the third best-selling craft brewery in the US multi-outlet channel in the 52 weeks to 25 December, according to an IRI report released this month. Sales, however, have been impacted by a decline for the US's biggest independent craft brewers. The IRI report said that Sierra Nevada was down 3% in sales and 5% in volumes over the 52-week period. The falling performance comes amid an overall slowdown in growth for US craft beer.

Glass recalls have caused headaches for North American brewers in the past.  A 2014 recall for Constellation Brands' Corona Extra was estimated to cost the company US$9m.
