The UK's Sheppy's Cider has labelled India a "natural destination" for premium cider as it launches exports to the country.

The Somerset company is now distributing its Classic Draught Cider brand in Mumbai as part of a fresh export drive. Master of cider at Sheppy's, David Sheppy, admitted cider is not well known in India but said there is growth in demand for premium alcoholic beverages.

"We're confident that our premium, traditional values and deep-rooted Somerset heritage will translate across cultures," Sheppy said.

Sheppy's is focussing more on exports, with sales to other countries last year up 47%. Exports to India are through India-based drinks specialists Morgan Beverages.

Last year Sheppy's became one of the many companies releasing a low-alcohol product when it launched Sheppy's Low Alcohol Classic Cider, which is less than 0.5% abv. Global brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev this month became one of the latest, rolling out a non-alcoholic Leffe to Belgium.
