The Philippine food and drink giant San Miguel has received an okay from the Thai Finance Ministry to produce beer in the country.

In a statement San Miguel said: "This is the first step in San Miguel's entry into the highly attractive Thai beer market," the company said in a statement.

In April San Miguel acquired a brewery in Thailand, when it agreed to  pay US$102m to buy Thai Amarit Brewery Ltd.

In the previous month it had also said it plans to build a new factory in Rayong to the east of Bangkok. The factory will make and distribute beverages, processed food and snacks and animal feed.
