SABMiller is preparing a US$6 billion bid for the Latin American brewer Grupo Empresarial Bavaria, the UK's Observer newspaper reported yesterday.

SABMiller is expected to make its bid for the Colombian group as early as this week.

Any offer by SABMiller is likely to force rival bidders out of the woodwork, with Heineken, Anheuser-Busch and Scottish & Newcastle likely contenders.

Last week, it was reported that Scottish & Newcastle had entered the bidding for the Colombian drinks producer.

Bavaria said last month that shareholders had informed the company's management that they have been exploring a series of alternatives, which could include a merger or a search for a strategic partner.

In January it was reported that SABMiller, Heineken and InBev had talks with Bavaria regarding a takeover.
