A London High Court hearing has opened on SABMiller's attempt to block Diageo from using its East African Breweries unit to buy a stake in a rival brewer.

An SABMiller spokesperson told just-drinks this afternoon (4 August) that the hearing, which opened today, looks set to run into a second day.

SABMiller is attempting to block East African Breweries, which is controlled by Diageo, from leaving a partnership with its subsidiary, Tanzania Breweries. It has accused East African Breweries (EABL) of breach of contract.

Kenya-based EABL already owns a 20% stake in Tanzania Breweries, which is Tanzania's largest brewer and is 52.83% owned by SABMiller.

But, Diageo announced last week that EABL has signed a deal to acquire a "substantial interest" in rival group Serengeti Breweries for an undisclosed fee. EABL intends to terminate its distribution and brewing agreement with Tanzania Breweries, Diageo said.
