Exports from the Spanish wine region of Rioja saw a 8.6% increase in value the nine month period to Spetember 2002, compared to the same perios last year.

According to data from the Wine Exporters from Rioja Wine , the region exported €199m (US$200.9m) of wine for January to September 2002.

Wineries exported a total of 47.4m litres of wine for the period, an increase of 21.1% year-on-year. But the average price of Riojan wine sold abroad in the period fell to €4.2 per litre, down 10.3% year-on-year.

The UK and Germany remained the biggest importers with sales of 12.7m litres and 9.4m litres, respectively.

However, Switzerland, Denmark and Finland reduced imports of Rioja wines for the first nine months of 2002, compared to the same period of 2001.
