Canada has legalised the recreational use of cannabis

The use of the drug became legal across the country today (17 October), although the sale of cannabis in food and drinks products is not expected to become law until next year. Uruguay is the only other country that has legalised recreational use.

Several US states, including California, have introduced legalisation, although cannabis remains unlawful at a federal level in the country.

Drinks companies have been eager to take advantage of the new opportunity in Canada, with Constellation Brands making the largest play. A year ago, the company spent just over US$190m on a near-10% stake in Canopy Growth Corp, a Canada-based medicinal cannabis producer. Then, in August, the group upped its holding to 38% - a move that cost $4bn.

Molson Coors has also invested, in Canada's Hydropothecary Corp. Meanwhile, reports have linked the likes of Coca-Cola Co and Diageo to considering a move.
