Carlsberg has stepped up innovation in the no- and low-alcohol beer category with the launch of a zero-alcohol version of San Miguel in the UK.

The brewer said today San Miguel 0.0% will be available from this month in Tesco, Asda and convenience stores. A lemon-flavoured extension, San Miguel 0.0% Limon, will launch in Asda and convenience stores from next month.

“Research suggests that alcohol free beers will play an important role in attracting different demographics into the beer category in the future,” said David Scott, brand & insight director at Carlsberg's UK unit. “Therefore our customers can expect further innovation in the alcohol free market from Carlsberg UK during 2015.”

In December, the Danish brewer told just-drinks it is lining up a major focus on “healthy” no- and low-alcohol beer across its markets. The company said it has identified a “very big opportunity” for so-called adult soft drinks and will roll out new products across Europe over the next few years.

Carlsberg handles San Miguel, which is owned by Spanish brewer Mahou San Miguel, under licence in the UK.
