Heineken has used it Scottish subsidiary, Caledonian Brewery, to launch the first in a series of limited-period collaborative beers under its Newcastle Brown Ale label.

Newcastle Scotch Ale, with an abv of 6.4%, is being released in the US this month, in six- and 12-packs and also on draught. The beer is described as a "full-flavoured" ale with "toffee notes", with a bitterness of 40 IBUs.

"Scotch Ale is a bold, yet balanced beer that will please lifelong Newcastle fans as well as more adventurous drinkers," Heineken said today. The brew will be available in the US until February.

Caledonian Brewery, which Heineken took control of after the Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) deal in 2008, is most famous for its flagship beer Deuchars IPA.

The Dutch brewer said the launch is the first in a 'Newcastle Collaboration Series', which will see it collaborating with "some of Europe’s oldest breweries" in 2015.

In August, the group re-released the Werewolf Blood-Red Ale variant of Newcastle Brown Ale. Prior to that, it used UK comedian and actor, Stephen Merchant, to promote the core brand in the US through an online video campaign.
