An 85% stake in Arcus-Gruppen, Norway's leading wine and spirit supplier, has been snapped up by a Swedish private equity company.

Ratos said today that it had signed a deal to make the purchase for 434m Norwegian crowns (US$66m).

Arcus-Gruppen is a producer and importer of wines and spirits and it is the leading supplier to the state-run drinks retailer Vinmonopolet.

Last year, Arcus reported sales of 2.1bn Norwegian crowns and profit before tax, interest and amortisation of 77m.

Arcus is being sold by Sucra AS, a consortium formed by Jensen Invest of Denmark, Berentzen Gruppe of Germany and several small Norwegian investors who have included HOFF.

Arcus was formed in 1996 when the Norwegian state, in order to comply with European regulations, split its monopoly on alcohol retail and wholesale. The government then reduced its stake in the wholesale business - Arcus - in a number of sell-offs.
