Portuguese wine exports exceeded €525m (US$457 mln) in 2001, the Portuguese Minister of Agriculture Capoulas Santos said, with volumes primarily coming from the wines produced in the Douro valley region, north eastern Portugal, which accounted for 70% of the total wine exports for 2001.

The region's Port wine was the most exported wine, Santos said. Portugal generated a €400m revenue from the Port wine exports in 2000.
