Pernod Ricard has completed the construction of a new Scotch whisky distillery ahead of schedule, with production due to kick off this month.

The Dalmunach facility, which is Pernod's 14th whisky distillery as part of its Chivas Brothers unit, has an annual production capacity of 10m litres of "Speyside style spirit", the company said. It has been built on the site of the former Imperial Distillery, which Chivas acquired in 2005, on the banks of the River Spey near Carron.

Plans for the facility were first announced two years ago. In February last year, the company said it was aiming to begin production in 2015.

Chivas has taken on eight extra permanent production staff to help manage the new site, which has eight copper pot stills. Total spend on the facility was not disclosed.

In 2012, the company said it was committed to an annual investment of GBP40m (US$62.2m) for Chivas

The firm said the new distillery will support "growing global demand" for its blended brands, including Chivas Regal, Ballantine’s and Royal Salute.

Laurent Lacassagne, Chivas Brothers' chairman & CEO, said: "The construction of the new Dalmunach distillery is a clear demonstration of our confidence and also of our commitment to invest to meet the significant growth potential (for Scotch)."

Last month, the Scotch Whisky Association revealed that export sales for the first half of 2014 fell by 11%
