Chivas Brothers, the Scotch whisky division of Pernod Ricard, has sold its Glendronach distillery to the BenRiach Distillery Company.

Just-drinks understands the deal, announced by Chivas yesterday afternoon (28 August), was worth slightly more than the GBP15m figure cited in recent press speculation.

The sale is part of Pernod Ricard's strategy to offload several peripheral wine and spirits brands in its portfolio.

Billy Walker, managing director of BenRiach, which is owned by a South African consortium, told just-drinks today that he was "really pleased" to have gained what he described as "fantastic distillery" with a big role to play in the "boutique and bespoke sector of the market".

He said BenRiach could "bring more energy to this distillery", and added that the group would conduct a brief strategic review of the Glendronach portfolio, with a view to product extensions.

Highlands-based Glendronach has a capacity of 1.5m litres.

Christian Porta, chairman and CEO of Chivas Brothers, said: "We currently have 13 operational malt distilleries, including the recently re-opened Braeval distillery, and we have also started significant expansion plans for The Glenlivet Distillery, which is one of the top 15 priority brands of Pernod Ricard. Therefore, our focus is to continue to develop and improve these distilleries."
