Pernod Ricard's Chivas Brothers unit has announced plans to consolidate its whisky packaging and bottling footprint in Scotland, with one of its facilities in the west of the country set to close within three years.

The division said earlier today that it will integrate the almost-500 staff at Paisley into a to-be-built facility at its other bottling site, in Kilmalid, Dumbarton, 12 miles away. No compulsory redundancies will ensue, with Kilmalid set to grow from 600 staff to a headcount of around 1,100.

Subject to planning permission, Chivas will spend GBP40m (U$49m) on building a new bottling hall and office set-up at Kilmalid. The move follows what the unit called an "extensive review" of its current operations.

"Our proposal … is a clear signal that we see a strong future ahead for both the industry and our business," said Chivas CEO Laurent Lacassagne. "This is a project of significant size and scale for Chivas Brothers, which is why we are announcing our proposal three years in advance.

"We want to provide ample opportunity to manage the transition of our business effectively and for our employees to adjust and adapt to working from a new site."

The transfer from Paisley will kick off in 2018, with the site set to close at the end of 2019.
