Pernod Ricard has raised doubts about a mandatory origin labelling scheme for the EU drinks sector, because of the global market in sourcing ingredients.

In a formal response to the European Commission, the spirits company said that consumers may be confused by differences in the origin of a primary ingredient, original processing and final manufacturing.

Labelling of a primary ingredient "cannot be considered a useful tool for consumers," said Pernod Ricard, adding that this would neither provide "information necessary for education on … product quality or conception, nor… health."

The Comité Européen des Entreprises Vins (CEEV) wine trade body has also raised objections to the EU plans for origin labelling of ingredients.

Responses to the plan can be found here.
