Pernod Ricard has welcomed a move by the US government to relax rules around bringing Cuban rum back to the US.

US president Barack Obama outlined his latest directive on US-Cuba normalisation late last week. New rules see monetary restrictions on items such as rum and cigars eased.

"Pernod Ricard is delighted to learn that the US$100 restriction is being lifted and that US citizens and travellers to the US will be able to bring back our true Cuban rum, Havana Club, to the US for personal use from anywhere in the world their travels might take them," a spokesperson for the company said.

In 2014, the US and Cuba announced the first step towards a normalisation of relations since the US introduced a full embargo against Cuba following the revolution in 1959.

Pernod jointly owns the Havana Club rum brand with government-owned Cuba Ron.
