PepsiCo is reportedly a target for a merger

PepsiCo has declined to comment on a report investor Nelson Peltz is building up a stake in the company with a view to merging it with Cadbury's maker Mondelez International.

According to a report today (22 March) in The Daily Telegraph, which cited sources familiar with the matter, Peltz has spent US$2bn building up stakes in Mondelez and PepsiCo. PepsiCo's share price today jumped by about 1%, around half an hour after trading opened in New York.

A PepsiCo spokesperson told just-drinks the company does not comment on rumours or speculation. “As we've said before, we are making strong progress in our strategy to deliver long-term growth and create shareholder value, and we do not see the need for any large scale M&A,” the spokesperson said.

Peltz is often credited as the catalyst for the split of Cadbury Schweppes, which led to the creation of Dr Pepper Snapple Group.
