PepsiCo and Monster Beverage Corp both stepped back from work on CBD-infused beverages after US authorities failed to guarantee the ingredient's safety, a newspaper has claimed.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that PepsiCo had been holding discussions on CBD while Monster had also been considering CBD drinks. Activities within the companies were sidelined, the WSJ claimed, when the US Food & Drug Administration said in November that it "cannot conclude that CBD is generally recognised as safe" for human consumption.

The FDA said its conclusion was based on a lack of research into CBD. The body sent letters to 15 companies for "illegally" selling products containing CBD.

The WSJ did not reveal the names of its sources, saying they were consultants and food scientists.

A spokesperson for Monster told just-drinks it would not comment on the article. PepsiCo declined to comment.

PepsiCo management has previously said it has no plans to enter the CBD category. In 2018, CFO Hugh Johnston told analysts: "I think the difficulties in investing in that category [CBD], particularly in the US where federally these things are still not legal, are quite a considerable challenge."

After the FDA's announcement in November, Laura MacCleery, policy director at US consumer watchdog The Center for Science in the Public Interest, warned that "just about everyone selling CBD in a food is breaking the law".
