A long-serving PepsiCo director has resigned from the firm's board due to “personal health reasons”.

James Schiro, who has been on the group's board since 2003, has stepped down with immediate effect, PepsiCo said yesterday (24 July). Schiro is due to receive treatment for a type of blood cancer known as multiple myeloma, according to CNBC.

Schiro, a former CEO of Zurich Financial Services and PricewaterhouseCoopers, served on PepsiCo board's nominating & corporate governance committee and its compensation committee.

Indra Nooyi, PepsiCo's chairman & CEO, said: "Jim's contributions to PepsiCo have been simply immeasurable... I will be forever thankful for Jim's years of dedicated service to our company, and we will keep Jim in our constant thoughts as he tends to his health with the support of his family and friends.”

Earlier this week, PepsiCo reported a slight rise in first-half profits, while sales were flat.
