PepsiCo has confirmed job cuts after reports it had closed its global marketing procurement department.

The soft drinks maker said the changes were "necessary for us to stay competitive while meeting the future needs of our business". It did not respond to questions on where the job cuts were made.

Ad Age said last week that PepsiCo had eliminated its global marketing procurement team and moved responsibility to individual brands. It also said the move could "spark a broader conversation across adland about the value of corporate procurement departments".

The report said the department employed about 12 people and oversaw agency relationships and media.

Last December, PepsiCo cut jobs at its office in Chicago.
