In an SEC filing yesterday, PepsiCo said CEO Ramon Laguarta will take over as chair of the board on 1 February. At the same time, Nooyi will retire from the position.

Laguarta, who is a 22-year veteran of PepsiCo, became CEO on 3 October. The company said at the time that Nooyi would continue as chair until early 2019.

"We are pleased to appoint Ramon as our company's chairman," said PepsiCo's board of directors presiding director Ian Cook. "He is an outstanding leader with a compelling vision for PepsiCo and a keen understanding of the evolving needs of consumers around the world. His vast PepsiCo knowledge, combined with his innovative thinking and proven executional excellence, make him the ideal steward to take on this most important role and lead our company into the future."

Laguarta is the sixth chairman & CEO in PepsiCo's 53-year history.
