PepsiCo's North American beverage business is back on track, the company's head has said, after a rescue plan launched last quarter helped revive Pepsi sales.

PepsiCo CEO Nooyi said Mountain Dew and Gatorade have also been doing well

PepsiCo CEO Nooyi said Mountain Dew and Gatorade have also been doing well

In April, Indra Nooyi warned of a "worrisome" performance for the North America Beverages division in the first quarter of this year. The CEO said at the time that the unit would increase spending in an effort to go "toe-to-toe" with rival The Coca-Cola Co.

Yesterday, after PepsiCo reported improved sales for North America Beverages in the second quarter, Nooyi claimed that the spending increase is already showing a recovery, with improvements for Pepsi in a "number of key brand health metrics". She said the cola brand had benefited from the Pepsi Generations push, a new campaign that launched during February's Super Bowl and continued throughout the year with fresh activations

The CEO also praised performances for Gatorade, which has seen the launch in the US of Gatorade Zero, and Mountain Dew.

"Every part of the business in North American Beverages is showing sequential improvement," Nooyi said. "In the second part of Q2, we saw significant improvement in performance and, as we go into Q3, we feel good about the trend rate."
