The new distillery, funded with a GBP3.75m (US$4.90m) lottery grant, will be housed in a disused building in Swansea, alongside a visitors centre, Penderyn said this week. Construction is expected to start at the end of this year, with a completion date set for 2022.

Plans for the distillery, which will add to Penderyn's existing site in South Wales' Brecon Beacons, were first announced last year, with the project securing planning permission by authorities earlier this week.

A spokesperson for Penderyn told just-drinks that the new site will have an annual capacity of up to 100,00 litres, a similar size to the Brecon Beacons distillery.

The new distillery will sit in the Powerhouse building, across the road from the Liberty Stadium, home of Swansea City football club. The Powerhouse was part of the Hafod Morfa Copperworks but has lain empty since the site closed in the 1960s.

Stephen Davies, Penderyn's chief executive, said: 'Penderyn are delighted to bring a copper-based industry back to this area. Once opened, we hope to see up to 100,000 visitors a year, and it will become one of the major attractions in the area."
