Ed Brown, who led Patron Tequila from an upstart spirits company to a multi-billion-dollar takeover by Bacardi, is to step down as CEO & president.

Brown announced today he will leave the Tequila company after 20 years at the helm. He will step down at the end of the year.
It was not immediately clear if he will be replaced.

Bacardi, which took full control of Patron in April, paid tribute to Brown and said his departure comes on the heels of a "smooth integration" of the Tequila house. The spirits giant said Brown "leaves a lasting imprint" on the spirits industry after overseeing a volumes expansion at Patron of just over 100,000 cases in 2001 to more than two million. It added that Patron "singlehandedly" created the ultra-premium Tequila category.

"Ed has been a generous partner as we've worked hard to integrate our companies without missing a beat," said Bacardi CEO Mahesh Madhavan. "We continue to be impressed with what he and his outstanding team have accomplished."

Brown will continue to be involved on the Patron board, Bacardi said.

Bacardi's Patron takeover completed a process started in 2008, when it took a minority stake in the company. In April, it took full control of Patron, which was valued at US$5.1bn.

Patron was founded in 1989 by Martin Crowley and John Paul DeJoria, the co-founder of the Paul Mitchell hair care products line.

Brown's departure adds to a long list of spirits CEOs that have this year announced they will step down. Constellation Brand's Rob Sands, Brown-Forman's Paul Varga, Beam Suntory's Matt Shattock and Edrington's Ian Curle have all given notice of their exits.
