Ocean Spray said tests have shown Cranberry +Health to be effective in combating urinary tract infections

Cranberry juice maker Ocean Spray is to launch its latest product exclusively into the US healthcare system.

Cranberry +Health, which claims to be a potential help in fighting urinary tract infections, will roll out in hospitals, managed-care facilities and retirement homes across the country. "This exciting new product gives healthcare providers a potential nutritional alternative for their patients that can help manage urinary tract infections," Ocean Spray said.

Cranberry +Health differs from retail Ocean Spray products in that it contains a higher concentration of cranberry compounds. One 8oz (24cl) serving of Cranberry +Health has 35 calories and 6g of sugar.

To back up its health claims, Ocean Spray said a peer-reviewed trial showed that symptomatic urinary tract infections were reduced by 40% in women who drank 8oz of Cranberry +Health a day. Urinary tract infections caused by catheters are the most common healthcare-associated infection, "with significant associated costs", Ocean Spray said.

"Cranberry +Health may be part of a more holistic solution to help lower healthcare costs associated with urinary tract infections and catheters-associated urinary tract infections, by reducing the occurrence of those infections," it added.

The new product is available through US foodservice distributors, Ocean Spray said.

The targeting of healthcare providers is a noteworthy move by Ocean Spray, which usually focusses on consumer retail. Last year, it launched the cranberry blend Cran-Mango in Australasia, China and South Korea.
