Liquor retailing restrictions in Australia's most populous state, New South Wales, would be relaxed if a discussion paper from the department of gaming and racing takes legislative form. The paper is an attempt to broaden alcohol distribution to increase competition for bottle shops and retailers.

The state government headed by Labor premier Bob Carr is expected to complete its review of the present law by the end of this year. However, Carr has already ruled out the sale of liquor in supermarkets and petrol stations saying it would increase the risk of underage drinking.
