Nichols, the company behind Vimto, is to offload its food business to focus on its soft drink brand.

The company would not reveal the value of the business, but said it was planning to up its spending on marketing this year by about 20%.

Gary Unsworth, the group managing director, has made an offer for Nichols Foods through a new firm he has set up called Newco. Unsworth has also stepped down from the Nichols board.
