Cooley Distillery is to launch a Michael Collins-branded Irish whiskey in the US. The independent whiskey company has signed a deal with US drinks distributor Sidney Frank Importing to potentially supply around 50,000 cases in year one.

Speaking to local reporters, Sidney Frank's chief executive, Lee Einsidler, said: "We eventually hope to bring the brand worldwide."

The whiskey, which will be available as an original blend and a single malt, was inspired by the 1996 film about Irish rebel leader Michael Collins. Cooley has trademarked the name, and will pay a percentage of sales to a charity chosen by Collins' descendants.
