Molson Coors has confirmed the Alton brewery will close in May

The company said today it has entered a consultation period with employees at its Alton brewery, in Hampshire, which will close at the end of May. The move has come after Heineken decided to move its UK production back in-house, Molson Coors said.

Around 75% of the brewery's production is from Heineken, but the contract ends next April.

A spokesperson said: “Regrettably, Molson Coors has been unable to secure alternative replacement volume.”

A Molson Coors spokesperson said the plans will impact 108 employees at the brewery, but that it will aim to “mitigate job losses”.

In May, Molson Coors announced plans to invest GBP28m (US$47m) in its Burton Brewery in the East Midlands, England.

Last month, the group reported a 4.6% drop in volumes from its Europe region
