Leading Spanish winemaker Miguel Torres has launched what it claims is the country's lowest alcohol wine.

The wine, named Natureo and which has an alcohol content of just 0.5%, answers the needs of those who like wine, but not getting drunk, said a spokesperson for Torres.

"Like drivers, pregnant women and consumers whose beliefs or religion require it," the spokesperson added.

Torres, which produces about 3m cases of Spanish wine per year, launched the white Natureo in Spain earlier this month.

Made from the Muscat grape, the alcohol content is reduced to 0.5% using a spinning cone, which separates alcohol from wine.

Last April another Spanish winemaker, Casa de la Ermita, launched a reduced alcohol wine called Altos de la Ermita, with an alcohol level of 6.5%.

Natureo retails at EUR7 (US$10) in Spain, and Altos de la Ermita at about EUR10.
