The Maltese wine production industry is poised to double in size, with its government securing from the European Union (EU) specific planting rights to increase its present 500 hectares of vineyards to 1,000.

Malta joins the EU next May and negotiated this additional quota in accession negotiations, also gaining €24m in EU rural development subsidies for 2004-6.
