Majestic Wines, the UK beer, wine and spirits retailer, saw a “challenging” Christmas trading period, with the group blaming promotions from its rivals.

Majestic saw its Christmas sales up slightly

The Hertfordshire-based company, which operates 211 UK stores, said its like-for-like sales in the 10 weeks to 5 January were up by 1.1%. Total UK stores sales rose 3.7% in the period.

In the firm's year-to-date, the first 40 weeks, like-for-like sales increased 2%.

Majestic said it invested 50 basis points of gross margin to ensure “pricing remained competitive in this more promotional environment”.

Steve Lewis, Majestic's CEO, said sales growth was achieved “in a difficult Christmas trading period characterised by promotional activity". He added: “We are now focused on delivering our final quarter’s trading. We anticipate this competitive pricing environment will continue throughout much of 2015.”

Last June, the group reported flat full-year profits after a slight rise in sales
